Nov. 8: As I Lay Dying: No class: after reading the novel, write a three page paper on a subject of your choosing. Begin with a title followed by a short quote from the novel that has some bearing on your topic. Please feel free to send me queries, questions, ideas by email: rpope@uakron.edu

Nov. 15: As I Lay Dying: Turn in your three page paper. In class, read the title, quote, and first paragraph, and tell us what you wrote about. You may read one other paragraph if you think it helps.

Nov. 22: Thanksgiving Break

Nov. 29: Critical Sources: Bring to class two abstracts of articles or book chapters read for your essay. Begin with the bibliographical information and follow with no more than two to three paragraphs on the article. Bring copies for everyone (15, including mine). In class, describe one of these.

December 6: Paper Due, total of 15 pages, MLA format

Requirements:

1. Attendance (one absence does not hurt grade—tardiness results in an absence when it accumulates to half of one class missed);
2. Reading of all texts and discussion;
3. Three-page paper on As I Lay Dying, November 8;
4. Seminar essay, MLA format, due by December 6

Grading:

Attendance & Participation 30%, short essay 20%, final paper 50%
